Red light therapy for skin

Independent guideCurrent product researchSources in context

Skin is a common reason people become interested in red light therapy. It is also an area where a general research finding can easily be stretched into a product claim.

Separate research from product claims

Photobiomodulation has been studied in dermatology and aesthetic settings. Those findings help explain the field, but they do not establish the same outcome for every consumer panel.

Protocol matters

Wavelength, dose, distance, treatment schedule, and the condition being studied all affect interpretation. Look for research that resembles the use you have in mind.

Safety context

A systematic review of oncologic safety for aesthetic skin rejuvenation found no relevant clinical trial evidence linking PBM to significant adverse events, while preclinical tumor findings were varied.
