Red light therapy safety and side effects

Independent guideCurrent product researchSources in context

Photobiomodulation is generally described as noninvasive. Safe use still depends on the device, dose, treatment area, health context, and instructions supplied with the equipment.

What recent consensus says

A 2025 evidence based clinical consensus described PBM as a safe treatment modality for adults and reported that red light PBM does not induce DNA damage. The paper addressed clinical use and specific indications, so its conclusions belong in that context.

Protect your eyes as directed

Bright LEDs can be uncomfortable to look at. Follow the eye protection instructions for your device because designs and recommended distances differ.

Health conditions and medications

If you have a condition that affects light sensitivity, take a photosensitizing medication, are treating a diagnosed medical problem, or have concerns about a particular treatment area, speak with an appropriate clinician before starting a home routine.

More exposure is not automatically more useful

PBM studies use defined doses and schedules. Follow the device instructions and treat dose as part of the protocol.
