Photobiomodulation explained
Photobiomodulation, often shortened to PBM, is a research and clinical term for using nonionizing light to influence biological processes. Red and near infrared light are common parts of this field.
Why the terminology matters
Consumer sites usually say red light therapy. Scientific papers may use photobiomodulation, low level light therapy, LED therapy, or related terms. Knowing those terms makes research easier to find and interpret.
PBM is a field, not one treatment recipe
Studies vary in wavelength, light source, dose, treatment area, timing, and clinical target. A positive result in one area should be read in the context of that protocol.
What current evidence looks like
A 2025 multidisciplinary consensus found support for PBM in several defined clinical applications. Other areas remain mixed or developing. Research on home devices has also reported promising findings while calling for more randomized controlled studies.
How to read a PBM study
Start with the population and outcome. Then look at wavelength, dose, device type, treatment area, frequency, and comparison group. Those details tell you whether a study resembles the question you are trying to answer.
